How Esketamine Works

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that has been used in hospitals for anesthetic procedures for several decades. Esketamine is a component in ketamine, and is considered to be the most effective part of ketamine to treat depression. That’s why it’s been isolated and is used in Spravato.

Esketamine is administered in our clinic under the care of our physician, as a nasal spray. It works by rewiring neural pathways in the brain, positively altering the mental state. Esketamine can effectively stop disruptive thought patterns and transform them into positive thinking.

Intranasal Spravato

While ketamine is offered as either a lozenge or injectable, esketamine (Spravato) is only provided as a nasal spray.

During your visit, we will show you how to use the nasal spray for self-administration. Once it’s administered, you will relax in our clinic to enjoy the experience and begin your healing.

There are multiple benefits to administering intranasal esketamine, including:

  • Fewer physical side effects compared to injectable ketamine
  • A gradual onset that many find less intense
  • A longer-lasting reflective state, often extending into the days following treatment

What Esketamine Feels Like

Since esketamine is isolated from ketamine, there are fewer effects that take hold that you may experience with ketamine.

However, you are still likely to feel the dissociative or psychedelic properties that ketamine is known for when taking esketamine alone. Typical sensations are described as out-of-body, giving clients the opportunity to view themselves and their thought processes from a completely different viewpoint.

The effects vary from person to person, but almost universally it is known to be a positive, uplifting, transformative experience.
